Sub-Zero
Sub-Zero Appliance Repair in La Jolla
Dual refrigeration is the thing worth understanding about your Sub-Zero, because it shapes every diagnosis we make in this town. The refrigerator and the freezer are two entirely separate sealed systems with their own compressors and evaporators, and no air is exchanged between the compartments at all — which is why a freezer that is still hard-frozen above a warm refrigerator has already ruled out the expensive half of the machine for you. What the two halves do share is the condenser air path behind the lower grille, and in La Jolla that air comes off the water.
La Jolla kitchens hold three distinct generations of this equipment and they fail in different places. The 600 and 700 series built-ins that went into Village, Lower Hermosa and Muirlands remodels decades ago are mechanically sound and electrically tired: condenser fan motors, defrost heaters, hardened compressor mounts and gaskets that stopped pulling years ago. The Designer columns fitted into newer construction up the hill bring control boards, sensors, and doors dragged out of square by the weight of a custom panel. The PRO series units sit between the two and mostly ask for coil and fan work. Saying which one you have on the phone is what puts the right part in the van.

Reviews
Fridge side went warm overnight while the freezer under it was still rock solid. He had the lower grille off within a minute and showed me the coil, furred with salt from us being a few blocks off the water. Cleaned it, new fan motor, sorted by that afternoon.

The glass on our wine cabinet fogged every gray morning and I was sure it was running too cold. It wasn't. The heater in the door had failed and the seal had gone soft at the bottom. He read the temperature at the rack, not off the panel, and left my setting alone.

The ice machine in the terrace bar had been getting slower all summer and we blamed the parties. He pulled the grille and the coil was corroded and matted. Cleaned it, checked the water side and the filter, full cubes again. Said to have it looked at before summer next time.

Frequently asked questions
In what order do you test things on a service call?
Grille off first, condenser and fan read: in a coastal town that is the likeliest fault. Then the compartment — fan turning or not, coil clear or iced. If iced, we force a defrost and watch the heater draw current and the ice clear. Thermistor resistance against its curve, door seal measured, temperature off an independent probe. The price comes after that.
