Most of the work we do in La Jolla comes from someone who has had us out before, or from a neighbor of theirs. That is the only marketing this trade really has.

We are only in the house a few months of the year. Came back to the wine column reading its setpoint while the top zone sat well above it, and the ice bridged into one lump in the bin. Rang late at night and got a person. He dealt with both in one visit.

Water was tracking out from under the built-in onto original wood floors and I assumed a line had split. It was the defrost drain iced closed. He cleared it, dried underneath and had a proper look at the boards before he left so I knew where I stood. Came out that day.

A whir behind the bottom grille that was not there last year, and up on our side of the hill it got louder through the afternoon when the kitchen heats up. Condenser fan bearing on the way out, so he changed the motor before it seized. Glad I called about a noise.

What people actually comment on

Almost never the repair itself — a working refrigerator is what was expected. What comes up again and again is the part around it: that the arrival window was real, that the price quoted was the price charged, and that the technician explained what had failed rather than presenting a total.

The second thing is that the appliance was serviced where it stood. Built-in units are fitted into cabinetry, often with stone worktops and panelled doors around them, and dragging one out to look at it risks more than the fault ever did. On this equipment the condenser is reached through the grille and the sealed system is designed for access in place.

Repairs that did not happen

Some of these reviews are for visits where nothing was replaced: a door seal reseated, a drain cleared, a filter that had never been changed. It is worth saying plainly that a diagnosis which ends in "this does not need a part" is a successful visit, and it is charged as a diagnosis rather than a repair.
