Common fault

Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?

Short answer

Check the freezer before you do anything else. If it is still hard-frozen while the refrigerator section has gone warm, a Sub-Zero built-in has already ruled out the expensive answer for you: the two compartments run on separate sealed systems, and one of them is plainly working. The fault sits on the refrigerator circuit, and it is almost always the evaporator fan that has stopped turning, a defrost failure that has iced that coil into a solid block, or the damper that meters cold air forward refusing to open. Those are ordinary parts and ordinarily one visit.

The reason we ask where in La Jolla you live before we load the van is that the same symptom has a different favorite cause on either side of town. On the ocean-facing streets, from Windansea and Bird Rock through Lower Hermosa and down to the Shores, the condenser has been breathing salt air for years. Salt deposit on aluminum fins is an insulator, so the coil stops rejecting heat properly, the compressor runs longer to compensate, and the first compartment to suffer is the refrigerator because it has the smaller temperature margin. Up through the Muirlands, Hidden Valley, Country Club and toward Mount Soledad, we are more often looking at a warmer room, a restricted grille and a control that has been cycling hard for a decade.

The sequence on the visit does not change. We pull the lower grille and look at the condenser and its fan first, because that is both the cheapest thing to fix and the most common thing to be wrong. Then the refrigerator evaporator: fan turning or not, coil clear or iced. If it is iced, we force a defrost and watch whether the heater actually draws current and whether the ice clears, which separates a dead heater from a thermistor that has drifted out of range. Then the damper, then the door gasket, checked with a measurement rather than a look, because a heavy custom panel that has pulled a door out of square produces a permanently warm refrigerator that no amount of new parts will fix.

If that matches what your appliance is doing, say so when you call — it tells us which parts to bring, and most of these are finished in one visit.
