Ice Machine Repair in La Jolla
Almost every ice complaint we get is a water complaint wearing a disguise. Cubes coming out hollow, small or half-formed mean the mold is not filling to the level it expects, which is a filter that is overdue, supply pressure at the inlet valve that has dropped, or a fill tube that has partly frozen. No production at all, in a compartment that is still perfectly cold, is the opposite fault and lives on the harvest side: the module, its thermostat or its motor. We put a gauge on the inlet before we quote a part, because that reading is the difference between the cheap repair and the expensive one.
What this covers in La Jolla
Sub-Zero built-in ice makers, the ice section inside a full-height refrigerator, standalone undercounter clear-ice machines and the outdoor units fitted into patio and terrace bars. Low production, hollow or cloudy cubes, no production, machines that run without harvesting, water valves and fill tubes, filters and supply lines, drain pumps, and the condensers that undercounter machines depend on entirely.
- Hollow, undersized or misshapen cubes — filter, supply pressure or a frozen fill tube
- No production at all with the freezer still cold — module, thermostat or motor
- Cubes fusing into a single block in the storage bin
- Water inlet valves, split supply lines and leaking compression fittings
- Undercounter and outdoor ice machines with restricted or corroded condensers
- Drain lines and drain pumps on standalone clear-ice units
The outdoor ice machine is the La Jolla-specific version of this job, and it is a hard life for a machine. Terrace bars and outdoor kitchens are common here, from the ocean-front decks around Windansea and Bird Rock to the view terraces up in the Muirlands and along the La Jolla Farms bluff. An undercounter ice machine on a terrace breathes salt air continuously through a small grille and rejects heat into an enclosure that gets warm on a sunny afternoon. Production falls first, quietly. The owner assumes the machine is simply not keeping up with a party. What has actually happened is that the condenser is loaded and partly corroded, the machine cannot finish a freeze cycle in its normal time, and every cycle after that is a little worse. Cleaning the condenser on a schedule is the whole prevention program for these.

Finally, a repair service that operates 24/7 as advertised. They were able to come late in the evening to fix our refrigerator in the Muirlands area. Lifesavers!

Fridge side went warm overnight while the freezer under it was still rock solid. He had the lower grille off within a minute and showed me the coil, furred with salt from us being a few blocks off the water. Cleaned it, new fan motor, sorted by that afternoon.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
In what order do you test things on a service call?
Grille off first, condenser and fan read: in a coastal town that is the likeliest fault. Then the compartment — fan turning or not, coil clear or iced. If iced, we force a defrost and watch the heater draw current and the ice clear. Thermistor resistance against its curve, door seal measured, temperature off an independent probe. The price comes after that.
