Frequently asked questions
You say 24 hours — is someone really answering the phone in La Jolla at midnight?
Yes — 24 hours a day, seven days a week, holidays included. A warm refrigerator at midnight gets a conversation with someone who knows the equipment. Whether a technician can reach you that same night depends on where they already are, and you hear that straight on the call. Same-day service in La Jolla is the aim.
Which parts of La Jolla do you cover?
All of 92037, plus 92038, 92039, 92092 and 92093. In practice: La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, the Village, Windansea, Lower Hermosa, the Muirlands, Country Club, Hidden Valley, La Jolla Heights, La Jolla Farms, and the communities either side: Pacific Beach, Clairemont, University City, Torrey Pines, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach and Point Loma. On the edge of that, call anyway.
Do you have to pull the unit out of a La Jolla kitchen to work on it?
Almost never. Sub-Zero built-ins are serviced where they stand: condenser and fan behind the lower grille, evaporator behind a rear panel in the compartment. These kitchens are finished around the appliance — stone countertops clearing by a fraction of an inch, original wood floors in the older Village and Lower Hermosa houses. Sliding a loaded built-in across those does more damage than the fault.
In what order do you test things on a service call?
Grille off first, condenser and fan read: in a coastal town that is the likeliest fault. Then the compartment — fan turning or not, coil clear or iced. If iced, we force a defrost and watch the heater draw current and the ice clear. Thermistor resistance against its curve, door seal measured, temperature off an independent probe. The price comes after that.
Do you carry the part, or does it have to be ordered?
Which part goes on the van is decided on the phone, from your model number and the symptom you describe — and on the older 600 and 700 series cabinets in La Jolla kitchens, that call decides whether we finish on the day. We fit the part specified for your model; a generic evaporator fan or control board runs for a season and comes back.
Will having you out void the warranty that came with the appliance?
We warrant our own labor and the parts we supply. If the appliance is still inside the Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking or Thermador factory warranty — quite possible on a recently remodeled La Jolla kitchen — call the manufacturer first and use the coverage you paid for; sealed-system work in particular is usually conditional on who performs it. We will tell you that on the phone.
Is a twenty-year-old Sub-Zero worth repairing, or should I replace it?
Repair, nearly always. These cabinets were built to be opened and serviced, and age brings ordinary parts: evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermistor, door gasket, ice maker module, condenser fan motor. Replacement is the expensive path — a built-in is cabinetry as much as appliance, and in most La Jolla kitchens the surround has to come apart to get the old one out.
Is there anything I should do before the technician arrives?
Clear the floor and counter around the unit: the grille and the toe kick come off. If the refrigerator is warm and the freezer still hard, move perishables into the freezer, not out to a cooler. Do not power-cycle for a reset; on a drifting sensor that hides the evidence. Outdoor drawer or terrace ice machine: unlock the side gate or leave us the code.
