Sub-Zero 600 Series alarms and error codes, in plain English
A 600 Series does not speak in fault codes the way a modern European oven does, and that is the first useful thing to know. Its panel has a short vocabulary — a door alarm, a temperature alarm, a condenser or service reminder, a display showing something it should not, and a diagnostic mode a technician enters on purpose. Nearly every code people go looking for turns out to be one of those five, and telling them apart is the difference between a five-minute adjustment and a real fault.
What the 600 Series control actually is
The 600 Series is the cabinet that put dual refrigeration into most kitchens: two compressors, two evaporators, two independent sealed systems, and no air passing between the fresh-food and freezer compartments at any point. The control behind the front panel exists to run those two systems and to raise a hand when one of them is unhappy. It reads a handful of thermistors, counts run time, drives the defrost circuit and the fans, and reports temperature. When something is wrong it has three ways to say so: change what the display shows, light an indicator, or sound an alarm. That is the whole language. Resistance values, which particular sensor has gone out of range, whether a compressor is actually drawing current — none of that reaches the front of the door. It lives in the harness behind the panel and in a diagnostic mode that has to be entered deliberately. So when a search result offers a tidy table of 600 Series fault codes, read it skeptically and check it against what your panel is genuinely doing before anybody buys a part on the strength of it.

The door alarm, and the version of it that is a real fault
A door alarm is not a failure. Leave a door open past the set delay and the cabinet tells you, which on a unit holding several hundred dollars of food is exactly what it should do. The version worth attention is the alarm that sounds, or the indicator that stays lit, with the door plainly shut. Two things account for nearly all of those. The first is the switch that tells the control the door is closed, which can fail outright and can also simply stop being reached because the door no longer arrives where it used to. The second is the door itself. A 600 Series door carrying a heavy custom panel puts a lot of weight a long way from the hinge, and across fifteen or twenty years that weight drags the door fractionally out of square. It still looks closed. The gasket seals at the top and gapes at the bottom, humid air runs in continuously, and the switch sits at the very edge of its travel. Before anyone orders a switch, that alignment is worth measuring, because a hinge and cam adjustment is the cheapest repair on the machine and it fixes a frost complaint at the same time.
The temperature alarm: which compartment fired is half the diagnosis
A high-temperature alarm means a compartment sat above its threshold long enough that the control stopped assuming somebody had left the door open. The most useful thing you can do in that moment is look at both compartments and note which one is genuinely warm, because dual refrigeration turns that observation into a diagnosis. A warm refrigerator sitting over a hard-frozen freezer proves the freezer sealed system is healthy, which confines the fault to the refrigerator circuit: its evaporator fan, its defrost heater or thermistor, or an evaporator iced solid enough that no air moves through it. Those are ordinary parts and ordinarily one visit. Both compartments drifting together points instead at something shared — the condenser and its fan behind the lower grille, the air path in front of it, or the supply. And there is an innocent version of the alarm that catches people out: a large warm grocery load, a long door-open session while somebody unpacked, or the first hours after a power cut will all trip it legitimately.

The condenser or service reminder is a timer, not a measurement
Panels in this family carry a reminder asking you to attend to the condenser, and it is worth understanding what that reminder is: elapsed compressor time, not a measurement. The control has no idea whether your coil is clean. It knows how many hours have accumulated since the counter was last reset, which cuts both ways — a cabinet in a cool, closed, pet-free kitchen can reach the reminder with fins you could still see daylight through, and a cabinet sharing a house with a shedding dog can be badly loaded long before the reminder appears. So treat it as a prompt to look rather than as a verdict. A reading that cannot be true, and the one that quietly can
Thermistors are the sensors this control depends on, and they fail in two ways that look nothing alike. The obvious failure is an open or shorted sensor: the display drops to dashes or shows a number no refrigerator could produce, and the control falls back to a default run pattern. That is annoying but honest, and it gets diagnosed quickly. The failure that costs food is drift. A thermistor that has aged out of calibration still reports a believable number, so the panel sits at precisely the temperature you set while the compartment holds somewhere else entirely — often several degrees warm, occasionally cold enough to freeze produce in the drawer. Nothing on the front of the door will ever tell you this is happening, which is why owners describe it as the refrigerator being fine and the food going off anyway. The check is trivial and anyone can do it: stand a glass of water in the middle of the compartment with an independent thermometer in it, leave it four hours and read the water rather than the air. Water has thermal mass, so it averages out door openings the way the food does. If the water and the panel disagree by more than a couple of degrees, believe the water.
The diagnostic mode, and why not to go looking for it
There is a service mode on these controls, entered with a button sequence, and the internet is happy to tell you what the sequence is. It exists so a technician can force a defrost cycle, run a compressor on demand and step through sensor readings deliberately, with a meter already on the harness and an understanding of what each reading should be. Used casually it does damage. Forcing defrost on a loaded freezer puts real heat into the coil while everything around it is trying to stay frozen. Parking a unit in a test state overrides the timing that normally decides when a compressor may restart, and short-cycling a compressor is one of the few things an owner can do to a Sub-Zero that turns a modest repair into an expensive one. Sensor resistance, similarly, is only meaningful measured against the published curve at a known temperature with the control powered down and the sensor disconnected; any other way the reading includes the rest of the circuit and means nothing. Those are technician procedures, and the cabinet is not improved by an amateur attempt at them.

Does the 600 Series really not have error codes?
Not in the sense of a printed table of alphanumeric codes each matching a part. It signals through indicators, alarms and what the temperature display does; the detail a technician needs comes from diagnostic mode and readings at the harness. Anything online offering a definitive 600 Series code list is worth checking against your own panel first.
The panel reads the temperature I set but the milk is warm. Which one is right?
The milk. A thermistor drifted out of calibration reports a plausible number, and the control faithfully holds the compartment wherever that wrong number tells it to. Stand a glass of water in the middle of the shelf with a thermometer in it and read it four hours later. Water averages out door openings the way food does; believe the water.
The alarm sounded after a power cut. Do I need a technician?
Probably not yet. Both compartments warmed while the power was off. Give the cabinet a full day with the doors shut, then look: freezer back hard and refrigerator holding means nothing failed. Call if the freezer never returns to a solid freeze, if one side stays warm while the other recovers, or if the alarm repeats with no power event behind it.
